How a WiFi scan actually works

Most articles say "run a scanner app" without explaining what happens next, which makes the results hard to interpret. The mechanics are simple.

When your phone joins a WiFi network, the router assigns it an IP address on the local network, usually something like 192.168.1.x. Every other device on that network has an address in the same range. A network scanner sends a quick probe to every possible address in that range, and every device that answers is on the network with you.

For each device that responds, the scanner reads two things. First, the hostname, which is the name the device calls itself, like "Samsung-TV" or "IPCAM-4F2A". Second, the MAC address, a hardware identifier burned into the device's network chip. The first half of a MAC address is an OUI, an organizationally unique identifier that maps to the company that made the chip. Look that prefix up in the OUI registry and "unknown device" becomes "made by Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology". This is the distinction almost every guide skips, and it changes everything about how much you can trust your results.

In a private Airbnb or vacation rental, you and the host's devices share one small home network. A scan sees everything: every camera, plug, and sensor the host has installed. Hotel WiFi is a different animal. Large networks enable client isolation, a router setting that prevents guest devices from seeing each other, precisely so one guest cannot snoop on another. On an isolated network your scan will return two or three devices, usually just the gateway and your own phone. That is not an all-clear. The second hidden network trick

There is one more way a WiFi scan can miss a camera even in a private rental: the camera is not on the guest network at all. Some hosts run their cameras on a second WiFi network, either the router's separate IoT band or a cheap second router, and only give guests the password to the clean one. Scan the guest network and you will find nothing, because there is nothing there to find.

You can spot this in about thirty seconds. Open your phone's WiFi list and look at every network in range, not just the one you joined. A locked SSID showing full signal strength inside the property, especially one with a name similar to the guest network or a default name like "TP-Link_5G" or "MIFI-XXXX", is broadcasting from very close by. What to do with a suspicious result

1. Record everything first

2. Confirm the manufacturer

Run the MAC address through the manufacturer lookup. A Hikvision, Dahua, or V380-style result upgrades your suspicion from "odd" to "there is a camera on this network". A smart-plug vendor may downgrade it. Either way, the lookup tells you what physical object you are hunting for.

3. Search along sightlines

A camera only earns its keep if it can see something, so search the spots with a clear view of the bed, bathroom, and changing areas. Check smoke detectors, alarm clocks, USB chargers, routers, air purifiers, and anything with a dark plastic face at eye level or above. 4. Escalate if you find hardware

If you locate a camera in a private area, photograph it exactly where it sits, then leave it alone.
